| Real Life Proposals |
| These are a selection of real life proposal stories as told to me as a result of a query I posted on the internet site Help A Reporter Out. I hope you enjoy and get some inspiration. Derry O Donnell ------------------------------------------------ I was at a personal development conference in Seattle at the end of May. My fiancé flew down in secret talked his way into my hotel room and scared the crap out of me when I back to my room that Saturday night. Let's just say that was one of the few times I've actually been surprised by anyone. Lea Ann Luchka, Calgary, Alberta

My now-husband had his friends at the planetarium create a special planetarium/laser show just for me! there were popping champagne bottles... stars and moons... and a wonderful ring.

One of my favorite places to go is Disneyland. My fiance purchased and had engraved a brick outside the park. On the day of our engagement, he said he had found something really cool on the ground and brought me over to see the brick engraved with our names and future wedding date. Then he got down on one knee and proposed :)
----------------------------------------------------------- I just came across your query on HARO and because I love my proposal story so much I thought I would share it with you. My husband Patrick wanted the day to be something I would remember forever. It was a beautiful September day in 2005. We had spent much of the day lounging & watching football, and then around 4:00 Patrick said he wanted to head down to the beach to grab a drink. We went to a restaurant right on the beach in Del Mar (interestingly this was also where our 2nd date had taken place). In any event, we were sitting outside on the patio sipping cocktails & having a great time talking & soaking in the sun. After about 30 minutes Patrick looks up at the sky and says what's that? I glanced up and turned back around and said It's a plane pulling a banner. Duh!!! He then said I know that, but what does it say? I turned back around and my heart literally stopped. The banner read Will you marry me Lani, love Patrick. By the time I turned back around Patrick was down on one knee, tears in his eyes, asking me to be his wife. I immediately said YES! and as we started to hug the entire restaurant started clapping and cheering. I had just assumed these were all strangers caught up in our romantic moment, but when I finally looked up I saw that Patrick had invited my entire family and all my close friends (they were all hiding inside the restaurant just waiting for the big moment). The champagne started flowing and the celebration continued into the night. We are now happily married with a beautiful 1-year old baby boy.

----------------------------------------------------------- I'm Skip Anderson and I'd like to tell you how I proposed to my wife ten years ago. I took the day off of work, but didn't tell my wife. In fact, I got dressed for work, left the house (we were living together), and after she left for work, came back home and started work on the dinner I had spent one week planning: Miniature cream puffs with a port wine and portobello mushroom filling; salad; paella; and a special dessert. So I put on my jeans and got to work. First stop was the grocery store, then the wine store, then back home to start a full day of cooking. I called my wife during the day to see how she was doing, and to find out what time she'd be home. I pretended to be very busy at work, when in fact I was at home with four pans on the stove and the biggest mess our kitchen had ever seen. Late afternoon finally arrived. I took a quick shower, put on my suit, and went to set the table with our good china and a wonderful centerpiece of fresh flowers. At 4:30, the harp and flute duo arrived at our townhouse. I had arranged for them to play for us during dinner, so they immediately got set up in the living room. I lit all the candles throughout the townhouse, made final adjustments to the food preparation, and waited for my girlfriend-hopefully, soon to be fiancé-to be home from work. Finally, the magic moment came. She walked through the front door, hearing the sound of classical music emanating from the living room. Since we often played classical music, she assumed it was the sound system, but when I walked her into the living room to introduce her to the harp and flute duo, she was speechless and confused...in a good way. She was also intrigued (and confused again) by the dim lights and all the candles throughout the townhome. Finally, I invited her into the dining room for a glass of wine and the appetizer course. The mini cream puffs were a hit. We continued the dinner, and finished it by sharing dessert in the living room as we listened to the classical musicians. Just as we were finishing dessert, the doorbell rang, just as planned. My girlfriend answered the door to find a massage therapist with a massage table. After I explained to her that I had secured the services of a massage therapist to give her an after-dinner massage, she went to the next room to prepare for her massage...delighted and, again, confused. The musicians left and I waited for her in the dining room. When her hour-long massage was complete, she returned to the dining room in her robe and a big smile for another glass of wine. We shared a toast, then hugged, and then I looked at her and said, I hope this evening made you happy, because that is what I was hoping for tonight. What would make me the happiest guy alive is if you would marry me. She said yes and I'll never forget her smile at that moment, and the feeling of her arms wrapped tightly around me. So now I'm married to Pamala Anderson; but not the Pam Anderson you know...a much, much better Pam Anderson. ----------------------------------------------------------- Hello Derry: In 1999 my wife(now) and I had been dating 3 years. Both 52. We had (sort of) discussed waiting to get married as I was starting a new business. Over the New Years Holiday, Y2K, 2000, we went to Banff, Canada, skiing for 6 days. On New Years Eve, we skied at Lake Louise, then drove back to Banff and had a nice dinner. At 10:30 I suggested we go to the Caribou Bar, a really great international bar in Banff, if you haven't been there. We got a seat at the bar, and the bartender was serving the best champagne you'll ever drink on the house. We were talking with German and British visitors immediately about skiing. At 12:00 midnight, the start of 2000, there was of course cheering and massive toasting. (It was 3:00 am already in New York). After about 30 seconds, I touched my (now) wife's arm and said I have something for you. She was busy toasting and chatting with the Germans next to her so I had to lightly grab her arm about 4 times to get her attention. Then out came the green box and she was so excited she could barely open it. I had brought her engagement ring, pretty nice from Tiffany's. So she showed it off to our new acquaintances to more cheering and toasts for health and happiness. The English couple next to me got most of the happenings on video and I gave them a card but have not heard from them. Anyway a very memorable moment, and we were married in June 2000 at Megan's bay in St. Thomas. We went back to Banff for New Years eve 2005, sat in the same seats, and there was a British couple next to us that had just got married that day. Also on the other side, a very nice German family. Health and Happiness toasts have worked very well. Take a look at our website at www.swedishdesigns.com. Best Regards, George R. Willison G.R.Designs, LLC 678-938-4230 georgerw@bellsouth.net

Good Morning Derry -
I work with the ultra romantic Bucuti Beach Resort in Aruba where several engagements take place each month. Below are three of the recent proposals that I found particularly original and romantic: #1 - One gentleman asked the Bucuti staff to set up a picnic on an isolated area of Eagle Beach near the resort. They laid out a blanket, candles, red roses, chilled champagne with glasses and chocolate covered strawberries. At sunset he took her for a walk and they stumbled upon this romantic beach setting, where he got down on his knee with a surprise proposal. #2 - Another very inventive guy had the Bucuti team help him create an adventurous scavenger hunt to lead his fiancé-to-be to the ring. Earlier in the day he had gone off and coordinated with the staff to hide the ring in a spot which they subtlety guarded until she found it. While enjoying a meal at the Pirates' Nest Restaurant, he invited her to partake in a thrilling hunt for buried treasure, complete with a pirate's map and small beach shovel. The clues led her directly to a big X in the sand marking the spot of the buried treasure - a gorgeous diamond ring. #3 - One of my favorites, the engagement that took place snorkel excursion in the Caribbean Sea. This inventive man had the ever willing Bucuti staff carefully package the ring in a waterproof box and hide it beneath the water at a nearby reef snorkeling site. The team then coordinated with the snorkeling charter regarding the ring's location and made sure the couple was dropped in the correct spot. He found the box and brought it up to her; they both got on the boat curious to see what was in the box. He then opened the box, got down on one knee, pulled out the ring and popped the question. Champagne came out and they celebrated as they cruised back past the resort and a Caribbean sunset. Best, Shanno Shannon Schiner
